Rock the Weber!

Creative competition for school classes with €300 prize money

in 2026, we celebrate the musical star of the Romantic period: Carl Maria von Weber. He was one of the great composers who worked in our city - a visionary and free spirit. He became a true Dresdener, and his famous opera "Der Freischütz" was written in the city. It is about the young Max, who wants to marry his great love Agathe - but has to pass a test to do so - and in the end there is a romantic happy ending! The "Freischütz" is considered the key work of Romanticism.

We would be delighted if you would engage artistically with the composer Carl Maria von Weber.

Your mission

We are looking for creative pictures, sculptures or films about the composer. How do you imagine Carl Maria von Weber? What might he look like today? How would he sound, speak, perform? Perhaps with an electric guitar, hoodie and glittery glasses? Or as a silent sound magician on a laptop? What do you love about him?

We, the Carl Maria von Weber Museum Dresden, the Freundeskreis Carl Maria von Weber Hosterwitz e. V. and Dresden Marketing GmbH, invite you to join us: Show us how you see, hear or feel "your" Weber. Let your creativity run wild!

Draw or paint a picture, design a figure or sculpture of the composer, produce a video clip or a performance art action or a podcast - we look forward to your creativity!

Why take part?

There are three prizes of €300 each, donated by the Circle of Friends, for the most creative works, which will be judged by a jury.

All entries will be presented digitally on the city museum's crowdsourcing platform. The best works will be presented at the Carl Maria von Weber Museum for the Elbhangfest 2026, which will be held under the motto "Rock the Weber!".

You can visit the Kügelgenhaus - Museum of Dresden Romanticism beforehand and learn important facts about the composer and his time in Dresden.

With this project, you open the door to a lively side of music and cultural history for your class or work group, linked to your own ideas and style.
